A module version is a consumer agreement
Infrastructure modules can reduce repeated configuration while spreading an incompatible change to every consumer. Versioning needs to describe what users can rely on: inputs, outputs, provider assumptions, resource identity and an upgrade path. A release number alone does not explain those boundaries. This guide offers a planning method, not a claim about an XIVTech client implementation.
For an India team sharing infrastructure across squads, begin with one representative consumer rather than redesigning every environment at once. Name a module maintainer and a consumer owner. They have different responsibilities: the maintainer explains the supported interface, while the consumer decides whether a particular environment can accept the change.
Inventory the interface before editing it
List required and optional inputs, defaults, exposed outputs and supported runtime/provider combinations. Include assumptions that exist only in examples or personal knowledge. A default network setting can be as consequential as a renamed variable. Describe which behaviors are supported and which remain implementation details.
Review resource addresses and persistence requirements separately from the input contract. A module refactor can produce a destructive infrastructure plan even if the consumer's input file barely changes. A source-code revert is not a general data-recovery procedure.
Pin a retrievable source
HashiCorp's module configuration documentation distinguishes registry version constraints from Git source references. Registry modules can use the version argument; Git sources select a supported revision through the source reference. Confirm the behavior for the actual Terraform version and module source rather than assuming one syntax applies everywhere.
Record the exact source selected during an upgrade rehearsal. A moving branch reference may resolve differently later. Version constraints also express a range, not proof that every version in that range was tested by the consuming team. Retain the accepted source and the evidence required to reproduce the review.
Describe compatibility in the release note
Write what changed, who is affected and what the consumer must do. Distinguish an additive input from a changed default, removed output, provider requirement or resource-address change. A semantic version is useful only when the project has a documented compatibility policy that its maintainers apply consistently.
Give migration instructions with prerequisites and limits. If state movement is necessary, refer to the supported mechanism and require an environment-specific plan review. Do not publish real state or sensitive plan output in a public guide. An upgrade note should help a consumer ask the right questions, not authorize production mutation.
Rehearse old and new consumers
Use an isolated environment and approved fixtures. Evaluate a new consumer as well as an existing installation upgraded from the supported prior version. Check important outputs and the proposed resource actions. A configuration validation pass does not prove that an existing resource will retain its intended identity or data.
In an illustrative storage-module upgrade, a maintainer might add a required retention input. The rehearsal would inspect whether the consumer supplies the intended value and whether the plan proposes replacement. The example is not delivered work, a compliance certification or a claim that storage changes are reversible.
Keep adoption separate from publication
Publishing a module does not require every environment to adopt it simultaneously. Let owners review the change within their release arrangements. Track supported versions, outstanding migrations and a maintained exception path. Avoid indefinite forks with no receiving owner, but do not force an emergency upgrade merely to make an adoption dashboard green.
- Name the module and consumer owners.
- Document the supported interface and source reference.
- Review defaults, outputs, providers and resource identity.
- Rehearse an existing consumer upgrade in non-production.
- Keep a reviewed plan, migration notes and acceptance decision.
Connect module work with scoped DevOps implementation and ownership in India. Agree maintenance and support separately. A reusable module can make a boundary easier to maintain; it does not remove the need for someone to own that boundary.
